Using Curricula
Curricula are groups of learning resources, allowing the admin to "bundle" courses, or create learning "tracks".
Using curricula expands the flexibility of the system in how it presents courses and to whom.
Curricula can be used to organize learning resources in ways that provide context in the overall program of learning.
Like learning resources, each curriculum has a target audience. A curriculum's audience is set in addition to the audience set for the course, so it is possible to expand upon the audience mapping functionality of a single learning resource.
There are several types of curricula used in the system. Some are used to organize resources on-screen and are thus visible to the user. Some are used only to map resources to additional target audiences -- this back-end structure is not visible to users.
- Catalog Curricula -- This type of curriculum defines the on-screen organization of resources in Course Catalog for the defined target audience. Your organization may have one catalog curricula for all users or you may have multiple curricula each with their own defined audience. The number of different defined audiences is what should be used to determine how many catalog curricula to create for your system.
- Mapping Curricula -- This type of curriculum allows an administrator to create one defined audience and then associate several resources with that defined audience. The resources can be designated as optional or required. Unlike a certificate, the user will not see the resources grouped together.
- Certificate Plan / Training Matrix -- This type of curriculum allows for enrollment in a group of resources all required to complete a single "certificate" or "training plan" for a defined target audience. Each resource is listed on the Development Plan, and completion of all of them is required for the completion of the "certificate". This type of curriculum allows for the re-use of course material in several situations (stand-alone, as part of one or more certificate programs) and tracked separately from the whole.
- Competency Model -- This type of curriculum defines the target audience for the included resources. It generally does not affect the organization, display or grouping of resources, although this option may be turned on at the system level for your organization.
Important Note for the ELMS: If training items are created in the GXP (ComplianceWire) module of the ELMS, these items can be placed in catalog curriculas in the non-GXP (LearnShare) module. However, when new versions of these training items are created in ComplianceWire, the new version will not automatically replace the previous version in LearnShare catalogs. The Admin will need to manually update any effected curriculas with the new version.
